I do quite a bit of drawing, sketching, painting etc. At times when I am out in the field AND without my camera (which is not very often) or I want to get started on a painting quickly, it is more advantageous to start sketching when I am on site.  It is not very convenient, however, to carry around a huge bulky sketch pad, along with the various drawing pencils I use to sketch.

This is quite a bit of fun!  Newtons Cradle is an instrument that was designed showing Newtons Law of Motion that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.  Thus if one ball is raised and dropped, one on the other end will do the same.  If we drop two balls, then two on the other end will raise in reaction to the force.  Or, you can look at it as a really cool toy for adults!  Kids could use it too, but they may tangle up the strings. Ask me, I know. I had one when I was a kid and I messed it up so many times!  It was tough to untangle.

This Newtons Cradle sold by ActionFly is made mostly of metal, the zigzag hanger and the balls. The balls are hung on a poly string. The base is durable plastic that looks like steel. It is very reflective.  This is a high class version of the old Lincoln log looking Newtons Cradle. I love it and have it on my desk at home. This is a dream come true!!  As a teacher, I have seen all kinds of pencil sharpeners come and go.

The old crank ones were dull or usually broken. Then the kids brought their own hand sharpeners. They were always sharpening their pencils until they were an inch long, or we spent a lot of time sweeping up pencil shavings from the floor.

Next, came electric sharpeners.  They never seemed to last very long.  Then enter  Imikas automatic electric pencil sharpener.  WOW! I love this sharpener!  It is sharp, collects the shavings in its own connected tray. When kids sharpen their pencils, it only goes as far as a nice sharp tip. They cannot keep going until no pencil is left. It stops when the pencil is sharpened.  It is fairly quiet.  The mechanics are metal with a sharp burr. The top and shaving tray is made of durable plastic.  It is about 10 inches long by 3 inches wide. It does not take up a lot of space.

I just LOVE Hummingbirds! So small, so tiny, so fast and so beautiful! Ever since I arrived in California, I have learned to pause and look especially when I think what I saw was a "big bee".  I have caught many pictures like the one above. I have been asked, "How do you get hummingbirds to come to your feeders?"
I reply, mostly patience.  I put nectar in the feeders with the plastic red and yellow flowers. Then, you wait. You wait for them to find your feeder. Each year I have seen the Ruby Throat and the Katharine, and Rufus, usually one or two at a time, fighting for their territory.

What really helps is having a good nectar. There are many mixtures out there, wet and dry. I have always bought the dry and mixed it myself. Most have you add red food coloring. While it can help to attract the Hummingbirds because the flowers they love are that color. However, certain reds can harm the birds, which is something I didn't realize until reading Centimom's information that came with her specially formulated Hummingbird feed.


Her Hummingbird Feed is put together with the health of the birds in mind. I have been struggling with portion control for quite awhile on my journey to loose weight.  I have weighed, measured portion after portion and still, it takes me forever to get my plate together.  My husband and people around the table would argue with me that “that doesn’t look like 4 ounces”, “you have to eat more than that or you won’t get  your metabolism to work digesting it and you won’t loose weight!”  It’s enough to make you scream.

ZARITA LUMBAR BRACE

Zarita Lumbar Back Brace is the answer for me. 

I have 3 bulging disks and a broken tail bone. ( I don’t know how it all happened, but it is there.) I was offered this lumbar brace to try and WOW!! My back feels so much better!  I put it on for four hours and my back immediately began to feel better. I could still feel my tail bone and I think that it is just too far down to be affected by the brace.

The brace is made of a special plastic material that contains copper and added magnets to help the back.  It has pockets for cold or hot packs.  It has Velcro attachments to make it tighter or loosened as needed. 

My husband wore it for four hours for his lower back and felt relief. The belt manufacturer warn that the lumbar brace should be worn only for a few hours at the beginning as some wearers reported a burning sensation if worn longer. My husband felt a little bit of this after four hours. But he is finding he can go longer and longer each day. I did not experience it at all.
